PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Welcome
My name is Dwana Washington. I have the honor and privilege to serve as the President of The Howard Club of Southwest Florida (HCSWFL), allowing me to give back to an institution that has given much to me.
It is my pleasure to welcome you to a site dedicated to the alumni, friends, and family of Howard University.
As President Biden stated in his 2023 Commencement Address – “There’s enormous pride in this university founded in the verses of the Howard anthem. And I quote, “Reared against the eastern sky, proudly there on hilltop high… There she stands for truth and right, sending forth her rays of light.” It matters.” The Howard Club of Southwest Florida was established in 2005 to spread the “Rays of Light” for educational and financial benefit of Howard University.
The HCSWFL aims to foster community awareness of Howard University and to establish closer fellowship among the alumni, friends, and former faculty of the university. The Howard Club works to grant scholarships and actively promote the education of students aspiring to attend Howard University – and mentoring those students while they are on “The Yard,” and as they pursue advanced degrees.
Please take a moment to explore our website. We welcome you to become a member. We do not want to exclude people; we want to include anyone who has a connection to our beloved Howard University. “The Mecca,” as Howard is fondly and proudly called, draws a vibrant community of Black people from all backgrounds. As Ta-Nehisi Coates states, Howard is a gathering place for Black people from all over the world.
Thank you for visiting our website. We are appreciative of your support through donations and/or attending our events. Your participation assures the continued success of the students and the university and staying connected helps us continue the esteemed legacy of Howard University.
With Bison Pride,
The Howard Club of Southwest Florida

Reared against the eastern sky
Proudly there on hilltop high,
Far above the lake so blue
Stands old Howard firm and true.
There she stands for truth and right,
Sending forth her rays of light,
Clad in robes of majesty;
O Howard, we sing of thee.
Be thou still our guide and stay
Leading us from day to day;
Make us true and leal and strong,
Ever bold to battle wrong.
When from thee we’ve gone away,
May we strive for thee each day
As we sail life’s rugged sea,
O Howard, we’ll sing of thee.
